Oman Athletics Grand Prix next month puts Muscat on world map

Muscat is set to make its mark on the international athletics scene when it hosts the inaugural Oman Athletics Grand Prix on September 5. This World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting will bring approximately 300 athletes from 40 nations to the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, marking a significant milestone for Omani sports.

Saeed bin Mohammed Al Hajri, chairman of the Oman Athletics Association (OAA), described the event as a "qualitative leap" for Omani sport. The OAA aims to establish the Grand Prix as an annual fixture, solidifying Muscat's position on the global athletics calendar. The competition will feature a wide range of track-and-field events for both men and women, offering athletes crucial ranking points within the World Athletics tour system.

The Grand Prix is seen as more than just a competition; it's a development platform. OAA vice-chairman and Grand Prix director Dr. Ali Al Marzouqi highlighted its significance in nurturing national talent, promoting sports tourism, and fostering international relations. For Omani athletes, it presents a rare chance to compete against international rivals on home soil, potentially improving their chances of qualifying for higher-level championships.

Beyond the athletes, the event aims to build expertise among coaches, referees, administrators, and organizers. The OAA's long-term vision is to enhance Oman's capacity to host major international athletics meetings, ensuring the impact of the Grand Prix extends far beyond the single day of competition.
