Oman issues safety guidance for chemical facility fires

The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) in Oman has released crucial safety guidance for the public concerning potential fires or explosions at chemical facilities. The authority stresses the importance of immediate and informed action to protect lives and property.

Residents living near such facilities are advised to move away from the incident site without delay. They should avoid approaching any smoke or chemical vapors that may be released. Crucially, individuals are urged to follow all evacuation instructions provided by the relevant authorities and to report any incidents through the emergency number 9999.

The CDAA outlined its own responsibilities in managing such emergencies. This includes responding to reports, assessing risks, actively fighting fires, handling hazardous materials, conducting rescue and evacuation operations, securing affected areas, and coordinating efforts with other relevant agencies. The authority emphasized that rapid response and strict adherence to safety instructions are key to mitigating harm.

The public is strongly encouraged to heed official safety instructions and to report any signs of smoke, fire, or unusual activity without hesitation. The CDAA also cautioned against the circulation of unverified information during emergencies, as this can cause unnecessary panic and hinder response efforts. Familiarizing oneself with emergency exits and evacuation routes in advance is also recommended.
