Oman proposes joint management of Strait of Hormuz, gains Gulf support

Oman has put forward a proposal for the joint management of the Strait of Hormuz by Gulf states, according to a source in the Persian Gulf. The initiative aims to establish a cooperative mechanism for the crucial waterway, which has been a focal point of regional tensions. The proposal is reportedly modeled after the Strait of Malacca, incorporating a voluntary fee system to fund navigation, environmental protection, and search and rescue operations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with his Omani and Saudi counterparts to discuss the Strait of Hormuz issue. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Araqchi stressed the need for enhanced cooperation and joint diplomatic efforts to maintain regional stability and mitigate insecurity caused by U.S. actions.

The Omani proposal, if adopted, would prevent Iran from solely controlling the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil transport. The initiative has garnered support from countries in the Persian Gulf region.
