Oman to launch community solar programme in renewable energy push

The Sultanate of Oman is set to significantly expand public involvement in renewable energy with the upcoming launch of the "Imtidad" Community Solar Power Stations Programme. This pioneering initiative aims to make the advantages of solar energy accessible to a broader segment of society.

Spearheaded by the Public Services Regulation Authority (PSRA) in collaboration with licensed electricity sector companies, the program will be inaugurated under the patronage of Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, the Minister of Energy and Minerals. The "Imtidad" program introduces an innovative model for community engagement in clean energy projects. It allows individuals and businesses to gain benefits from solar power without the need for personal installation of solar panels on their properties.

Instead of direct installation, subscribers will receive credits on their monthly electricity bills, reflecting the energy generated by community solar stations connected to the national grid. This system ensures that electricity produced by dedicated solar facilities is allocated to participating subscribers through a regulated mechanism. The program is designed to help reduce monthly electricity costs while actively supporting Oman's transition towards cleaner energy sources.

The programme is also expected to contribute to the sustainability of the national electricity subsidy system by promoting cost-effective clean energy solutions and encouraging more efficient energy consumption.

A key highlight of the launch ceremony will be the inauguration of the Wadi Al Kabir Community Solar Power Station. This facility represents the first project developed under the "Imtidad" program and marks the establishment of Oman's first community solar power station. It is intended to serve as a pilot for the gradual expansion of similar community-based solar initiatives across the Sultanate's governorates.

Dr. Mansoor bin Talib Al Hinai, Chairman of the Public Services Regulation Authority, described the program as an innovative national model that broadens access to renewable energy benefits and strengthens community engagement in the energy transition. He stated that the initiative enables the public to participate in solar energy projects through a flexible and inclusive framework, maximizing the value of available assets by transforming them into productive energy resources. The program is also expected to yield economic, social, and environmental gains, support electricity consumers, encourage renewable energy investment, enhance local content, and create new opportunities for Omani professionals and businesses in the clean energy sector.
