One bullet and a car locked from the inside: Veracruz governor urges restraint over Zenyazen Escobar’s death

A single bullet was found inside the vehicle where federal lawmaker Zenyazen Escobar García was discovered dead, Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García said. The car stood on the Xalapa-Veracruz highway, locked from the inside with its locks engaged.

Escobar, a Morena lawmaker and former Veracruz education secretary, was found over the weekend with a gunshot wound to the head. His body was discovered near the community of La Gloria, in the municipality of Puente Nacional.

It was very striking because of how it happened: he was found by the side of the road inside his car, the car locked from the inside, with the locks engaged; there was a single bullet, a single bullet. The relevant authorities will issue the report.

Speaking to a radio news program, Nahle called the death lamentable and urged people not to speculate, particularly out of respect for Escobar’s family and wife. She said prosecutors were carrying out forensic and ballistic examinations along with other investigative work.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is handling the case under the terms of the law, Nahle said, while state authorities are also involved. She expressed confidence that the federal office would release the investigation’s conclusions.

For his family and wife, I respectfully asked that there be no speculation, and we hope the result will be issued. Forensic and ballistic analyses and many other examinations are being carried out by federal and state prosecutors.
