One dead, 10 wounded in France car ramming; no terror motive suspected

A man drove a car into a group of pedestrians in Caen, northwestern France, late Wednesday, killing one person and injuring 10 others. The 26-year-old suspect, who was born in Russia, was apprehended by authorities.

Seven of the injured remain in critical condition, while three sustained minor injuries. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. local time. Police sources indicated that the ramming may have followed a dispute, with the car deliberately targeting people in the street opposite the train station.

While the suspect was known to police for traffic offenses, he was not on the radar of intelligence services. Authorities have opened an investigation into charges of murder and aggravated assault. However, the deputy prosecutor stated that a terrorist motive is not currently suspected, though the investigation is in its early stages.

Victims, all appearing to be men between the ages of 17 and 40, were struck as the suspect drove his vehicle into them. He fled the scene but was later arrested in Ouistreham, approximately 20 kilometers away.
