One dead, five injured in rockfall at Egypt's Sukari gold mine

A fatal rockfall has claimed one life and injured five others at Egypt's Sukari gold mine, the country's largest. The incident occurred within a tunnel in an underground work section of the mine, located in the Eastern Desert region.

The Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources confirmed the incident, stating that work at the site has been temporarily halted pending an investigation. The injured workers were transported to a hospital in Marsa Alam, a town near the Red Sea, where initial assessments indicate they are in stable condition.

In response, Oil and Raw Materials Minister Karim Badawy has ordered the formation of a committee to thoroughly investigate the rockfall. This committee will be tasked with identifying the causes of the accident, reviewing current health and safety procedures at the mine, and proposing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Sukari mine is a joint venture between the Egyptian government and AngloGold Ashanti, which acquired the mine's former operator, Centamin, in 2024. The mine is situated approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Marsa Alam.
