One dead, one missing in Lake Annecy drowning during heatwave

A tragic incident unfolded in the picturesque Lake Annecy on Tuesday, resulting in one confirmed drowning death and another person still missing. Emergency services were alerted early in the afternoon to reports of two individuals who had not resurfaced from different parts of the lake.

Firefighters and rescue teams, comprising over 50 personnel, including divers, specialized dogs, and drones, were mobilized to locate the second victim. "The climatic conditions are quite trying," noted Commandant Rémi Viard of the Haute-Savoie Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS). He explained that the intense heat, combined with people not adequately cooling down before entering the water, increases the risk of vasovagal syncope or heatstroke, especially in cooler lake waters.

The Haute-Savoie department, where the lake is located, is currently under an orange alert due to the ongoing heatwave affecting more than half of France. This extreme heat has already been linked to numerous fatalities nationwide. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu reported earlier that 40 people, "essentially young people," had drowned across France since June 18.
