One dead, one seriously injured after car plunges down embankment in Hualien

A fatal car accident occurred late Tuesday night on Highway 11 in the Shuilian section of Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, Taiwan. A 51-year-old male driver, identified by his surname Liao, was traveling south when his vehicle lost control, collided with a guardrail, and plunged approximately 10 meters down an embankment.

Emergency services were dispatched after receiving a report of the crash. Upon arrival, rescuers found the car severely deformed and on fire. The driver, Mr. Liao, was found in a state of cardiac arrest and was rushed to Mennonite Christian Hospital. Despite extensive efforts, he was pronounced dead at 1:25 AM on Wednesday.

A 37-year-old female passenger, identified by her surname Yeh, was also in the vehicle. She suffered multiple abrasions, a suspected concussion, and fractures to her lower body. She is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

Police have conducted preliminary investigations at the scene and have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor after a blood test. Investigators are reviewing dashcam footage from the vehicle and surveillance cameras in the surrounding area to determine the exact cause of the crash. The Hualien District Prosecutor's Office will conduct a further examination of the accident site and the deceased.
