One dies, seven injured as truck rams into Osun APC campaign procession

A fatal accident occurred during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign procession in Ede, Osun State, resulting in one death and seven injuries. The incident happened on Wednesday when a truck collided with participants during a rally supporting APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji.

One person was killed in the accident. Seven others were injured, but one out of the seven was critically injured.

The deceased has been identified as AbdulRasaq Ahmed. Among the seven injured, one sustained critical injuries. Remi Omowaiye, Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee for the campaign, confirmed the casualties and stated that the injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals. He noted that one person was critically injured.

It was a sad incident and one which could have been avoided. The coordinator of the Federal Road Safety Corps had earlier directed that vehicles should use one lane of the road while APC members used the other lane. However, the truck driver drove through the lane we were walking on and rammed into the crowd. The boy was killed in the process, while many got injured and are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Eyewitnesses and APC officials have called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. An eyewitness alleged that the truck driver disregarded traffic directives from Federal Road Safety Corps officials managing traffic for the rally. The witness stated that the truck drove onto the lane occupied by the procession, leading to the collision. Benjamin Adereti, the running mate to the APC governorship candidate, visited the family of the deceased and urged security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly. He questioned whether the incident was a deliberate act by political opponents, asserting that the APC remains unstoppable regardless.

We are still trying to unravel the reason behind this. The way the incident happened looked like the truck deliberately rammed into our party members in Ede while campaigning. I want to call on the security agencies in Osun and Nigeria to carry out a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of this incident.
