One killed and five injured in Minneapolis shooting

At least one person was killed and five others injured in a shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday, including two police officers, CNN reported, citing officials.

Hennepin County Medical Center confirmed it received six patients after the shooting, with one later dying. Police urged people to avoid the area around 15 East Grant Street, where the shooting was reported at about 5:45 p.m. local time.

Dozens of police vehicles and officers surrounded the area as pedestrians continued moving nearby. The scene was close to an apartment complex, the Minneapolis Convention Center, hotels and a hospital. The nearby University of St. Thomas’ Minneapolis campus was placed under lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” a university spokesperson told CNN.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said his public safety team was responding and that state officials were at the scene. “Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbours in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz wrote on Facebook. He added, “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

Federal agencies also responded. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said its agents were responding to an active shooter situation near East Grant Street and South Marquette. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau would provide “any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.”
