Online flashlight purchase turns to garbage; buyer accuses seller of fraud, criticizes prosecutors

A Taipei man's online purchase of a tactical flashlight for NT$3,060 turned into a dispute over alleged fraud and prosecutorial bias. The buyer, identified only as Mr. Chiu, claimed he ordered the flashlight from a Tainan-based seller, Mr. Lin, via a second-hand platform and paid on October 28. Chiu alleged that Lin delayed shipping and was unresponsive, prompting Chiu to report the issue to Taipei police on November 1. A police officer then contacted Lin, who subsequently shipped the item.

Upon receiving the package on November 3, Chiu recorded himself opening it, only to find it filled with garbage. He reported Lin for fraud, presenting the video as evidence. However, prosecutors in Tainan dismissed the case, noting that the tape on the package in Chiu's video showed signs of being cut, which differed from the original shipping photos provided by Lin. The prosecution suggested the contents might have been swapped before or after delivery.

The buyer criticized the prosecutors for allegedly protecting the seller and plans further legal action.

Chiu expressed disbelief at the ruling, questioning the fairness of the Tainan judiciary and suggesting it contributes to the persistence of fraud in Taiwan. He plans to seek further legal remedies and has brought the case to the media. The Tainan District Prosecutors Office stated that the reasons for their decision are detailed in the non-indictment document and declined further comment.
