Only the signature is missing: Rubén Darío Insúa close to returning to San Lorenzo

Rubén Darío Insúa is one signature away from returning to the San Lorenzo bench. After a meeting lasting just over three hours, club officials, Insúa’s representatives and members of his coaching staff reached broad agreement on his return.

If the contracts reflect what the parties discussed, Insúa will sign through December 2027. He would replace Néstor “Pipo” Gorosito, who San Lorenzo dismissed after eight matches following Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Instituto in Córdoba.

The negotiations moved quickly after the first formal conversation, despite a legal and financial dispute involving several assistants from Insúa’s previous spell. Except for Fabián García, the assistants had formally demanded payment from the club. San Lorenzo paid one of them last week, allowing the club to register Facundo Farías, who is expected to start against Talleres on Saturday at the Pedro Bidegain stadium.

The dispute had been a major obstacle for several hours, and some directors opposed Insúa’s appointment. The willingness shown by his close assistants helped settle the issue, even though some officials remained unconvinced by the footballing direction. Leandro Cufré was also considered, but his limited coaching experience and lack of consensus left the path open for Insúa, the only coach this board negotiated with in recent days.

Insúa was in Miami with his family, visiting one of his sons and his grandson. He is expected to return to Argentina soon, attend the match and take charge of the squad early next week after Walter Perazzo’s interim spell. “The day San Lorenzo needs me, I will be there,” Insúa said four years ago. During his previous cycle, he took over a team near the relegation zone and led it to qualification for the 2023 Copa Sudamericana and the 2024 Copa Libertadores.
