Onyedika sixth Nigerian to join Frankfurt

Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika has completed a move to German club Eintracht Frankfurt, signing a five-year contract that runs until June 2031. He will wear the number 25 shirt, following in the footsteps of other Nigerian players who have represented the Bundesliga outfit.

Onyedika joins Frankfurt from Club Brugge, where he achieved considerable success, including two league titles, the Belgian Cup, and the Belgian Super Cup. He also won the Danish Cup with FC Midtjylland during his earlier spell outside Belgium. His transfer to Frankfurt marks him as the sixth Nigerian player to join the German club.

Other Nigerians who have previously played for Eintracht Frankfurt include Isaac Ojigwe, Donald Agu, Nduka Anyanwu, Henry Isaac, and Austin Okocha. Onyedika brings extensive experience to his new team, having made 268 senior club appearances across all competitions, including 24 UEFA Champions League matches over the last three seasons. He also has 26 senior caps for Nigeria and was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Markus Krösche, Frankfurt's board member for sport, expressed enthusiasm for the signing. "Raphael Onyedika has not only impressed us with his physicality and strategic understanding of the game, but above all with his extraordinary consistency," Krösche stated. "He has been a regular starter in recent years and has won numerous trophies in Belgium. He also boasts valuable international experience. At 25, he still has great potential and is an important building block in terms of the structure of our squad."

The 25-year-old midfielder was linked with a move away from Belgium since last season. He is expected to make his unofficial debut in a pre-season friendly against Hull City next weekend, with a potential competitive debut scheduled for August 21 in the DFB-Pokal.
