Onyeka warns Coventry teammates ahead of Arsenal clash

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has cautioned his Coventry City teammates to avoid complacency as they prepare for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 21. Onyeka stressed the importance of tactical discipline when facing a formidable Arsenal side, which he described as difficult to contain.

I would have to say Man City, Arsenal, Brighton, Liverpool. Those are the teams that you know will have the ball a lot, and so you need to run, and you need to defend. Those are the teams that are really getting close to you, so you need to be compact, and you need to be focused.

Coventry returns to the top flight after a 22-year absence, having secured promotion under manager Frank Lampard. Onyeka, a key player during their EFL Championship campaign, identified Arsenal, Manchester City, Brighton, and Liverpool as the teams his side should be most wary of. He emphasized the need for intense defensive effort and compactness against teams that dominate possession.

"Those are the teams that you know will have the ball a lot, and so you need to run, and you need to defend," Onyeka told Coventry Live. He specifically pointed out the clever off-ball movement of players like Kevin De Bruyne, Martin Odegaard, and Phil Foden, warning that focus must be maintained throughout the match to avoid being punished.

In terms of individuals, the likes of De Bruyne, Odegaard and Foden, because what they do is they are so clever playing behind you so you cannot really see where they are. You have to be focused throughout because you can get punished at any time. So we need to be tactically strong and defend well, and make sure we take our chances from set-pieces and counter attacks.

Onyeka also welcomed manager Frank Lampard's decision to sign a new contract until 2029. "It was nice because I had heard some rumours that he was maybe going to leave, and that was like, oh. But it is great because he is a legend of the game and I watched him play," he said. The midfielder expressed pride in being part of the club and gratitude for the opportunity Lampard has provided.
