Operation Anthropoid: Czechoslovak exiles assassinate Nazi official Reinhard Heydrich

Operation Anthropoid, a daring mission by Czechoslovak exiles, achieved a significant blow against the Nazi regime by assassinating Reinhard Heydrich, the acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, on June 4, 1942. This successful diversionary action, carried out by paratroopers sent from London, targeted one of the most reviled Nazi figures and represented the highest-ranking official eliminated by resistance fighters in occupied territories.

The operation underscored the unwavering resolve of both the Czechoslovak government-in-exile and the domestic resistance movement to combat Hitler's tyranny. The paratroopers, aware of the near-certainty of their own demise, displayed extraordinary courage. Their bravery is now commemorated near the assassination site by a unique monument: a nine-meter-high column featuring three figures back-to-back, symbolizing the two paratroopers and a civilian representing their helpers.

Beyond its immediate impact, Heydrich's assassination played a crucial role in the post-war restoration of Czechoslovakia. Following his death, Great Britain rescinded its endorsement of the Munich Agreement and pledged support for the re-establishment of Czechoslovakia's original borders.
