Opposition figure Omar Gonzalez returns to Venezuela after over a year in exile

Opposition figure Omar Gonzalez announced on Friday that he is returning to Venezuela, concluding over a year spent in exile. Gonzalez had been living in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas with other members of María Corina Machado's team for more than 400 days.

He departed the embassy in mid-2025, reportedly as part of a clandestine operation named "Operation Guacamaya." Since then, he had remained abroad.

Gonzalez expressed his emotions before boarding his flight, stating, "I am about to board the plane that takes me back to Venezuela. I return with a heart full of emotion, hope, and love for my land." He plans to land at Barcelona airport in Anzoátegui state due to issues at Simón Bolívar International Airport caused by seismic activity.

Upon his return, Gonzalez aims to re-engage in the Venezuelan people's pursuit of liberty and democracy. He asserted he is returning "stronger than ever" with the sole aspiration of supporting Venezuelans as María Corina Machado, whom he called the "leader of the Venezuelans," approaches.
