Opposition Party Nominates Members for Special Prosecutor Recommendation Committee

The Democratic Party, South Korea's main opposition, has put forward three nominees for a public recommendation committee tasked with selecting a special prosecutor. This committee will investigate alleged irregularities during the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections, particularly concerning a shortage of ballots. The party announced the nominations on Tuesday, fulfilling its role in the selection process outlined by the law on the appointment of special prosecutors.

The three individuals nominated by the Democratic Party are lawyers Jo Doo-hyun and Jo Ki-yeon, and Professor Ha Sang-eung of Sogang University's political science department. Jo Doo-hyun previously served as the head prosecutor of the Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office in Sokcho. Jo Ki-yeon has experience as a member of the Ministry of Education's administrative disposition committee, while Professor Ha Sang-eung has been active as the political reform committee chair for the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice.

These three nominees will collaborate with three individuals recommended by the ruling People Power Party. Together, they will receive recommendations for special prosecutor candidates from the Korean Bar Association and the Conference of Korean Law School Deans, totaling six potential candidates. Ultimately, a consensus between the ruling and opposition parties will narrow this list down to two, from whom President Lee Jae-myung will appoint the special prosecutor.

The People Power Party had previously announced its nominees: lawyers Kim Yong-kwan and Choi Chang-wook, and Professor Cha Jin-ah from Korea University's Law School. The establishment of a special prosecutor aims to thoroughly investigate and address public concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
