Opposition to Calibrate Plans for FCRA, Ram Temple Debates

India's opposition parties are grappling with how to calibrate their parliamentary strategy, facing a divide over whether to engage in a debate on the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) amendment bill or continue protests regarding alleged theft of Ram Mandir donations. While some parties, including the Congress, Left parties, and TMC, favor participating in the FCRA debate to register their objections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) insists on prioritizing the issue of alleged misappropriation of temple donations. The FCRA amendment bill, introduced in March, includes provisions for a designated body to manage assets of organizations that lose their FCRA certificates. Critics argue it has far-reaching consequences for NGOs and civil society. "This bill is important for us. We can’t allow the government to pass the bill without us putting up any resistance," stated a CPIM leader. A senior Congress leader added, "The bill has far-reaching consequences for NGOs and civil society. We must protest against the bill as far as possible." Conversely, the SP views the Ram Mandir donation issue as a matter of faith for millions. "We want a discussion on the Ram Mandir chanda chori. The government is trying to shy away from the debate," said Samajwadi MP Awadhesh Prasad. The internal debate highlights the challenge of balancing these distinct issues, especially with the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, where the SP is a key player against the BJP. Opposition leaders are seeking a "perfect balance" to address both the FCRA concerns and the temple donation allegations, recognizing the need to support allies like the SP while also pursuing their own agendas.
