Orcas, dolphins reach evolutionary limit, cannot return to land: study

Orcas and dolphins have crossed an irreversible evolutionary threshold, rendering a return to terrestrial life impossible, a new scientific study reveals. For millions of years, these mammals evolved from land-dwelling ancestors, gradually adapting to aquatic environments until they became fully marine creatures.

The research, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B and led by Bruna Farina of the University of Freiburg, analyzed over 5,600 mammal species. It categorized them based on their adaptation to water, from fully terrestrial to fully aquatic. The study aimed to understand the reversibility of evolutionary changes.

When a species adapts completely to the aquatic environment, the possibility of developing a terrestrial life again disappears.

Findings indicate that while terrestrial mammals can transition to semi-aquatic life and retain land mobility, a definitive boundary exists. Once a species becomes entirely aquatic, the capacity to re-evolve for land-based existence disappears. Cetaceans, including dolphins and orcas, have reached this point.

This irreversible adaptation is attributed to profound physical and physiological modifications over millennia. Their bodies transformed for efficient movement in water, limbs became flippers, and their overall form optimized for marine environments. These changes, coupled with shifts in metabolism and thermoregulation, are intrinsically linked to survival in the ocean, making a return to land biologically unfeasible. The study aligns with Dollo's Law, which posits that complex traits, once lost through evolution, are unlikely to be regained.
