Origin Energy confirms customer data breach

Origin Energy has confirmed that unauthorized parties accessed and disclosed some of its customers' data, following an investigation into a potential breach.

The company stated that it is still working to determine the total number of affected customers and will notify them directly once confirmed. The compromised data may include names, addresses, dates of birth, contact phone numbers, account details, and partial payment information, such as the last four digits of a credit card or the last three digits of a bank account.

Origin's Chief Executive, Frank Calabria, apologized for the incident, acknowledging the trust customers place in the company with their information. He emphasized that securing systems and preventing further unauthorized access are top priorities.

The incident initially came to light when The Australian newspaper was contacted by an alleged hacker who provided a sample of 50 customer records. After The Australian shared this information with Origin, the company alerted authorities and the Australian Securities Exchange. Origin is one of Australia's largest energy retailers, serving over 4.8 million customers across various services.
