Orthodox Church celebrates Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a holiday tied to women and children

The Serbian Orthodox Church and its followers are observing the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, a significant Christian feast day widely known as Velika Gospojina.

This holiday, celebrated annually on August 28 (or August 15 according to the Julian calendar), marks the Virgin Mary's passing from earthly life and her subsequent ascension into heaven, according to religious tradition.

Beyond its religious importance, Velika Gospojina is deeply ingrained in Serbian folk culture, particularly for women, mothers, and children. Numerous customs and beliefs are associated with this day, emphasizing its multifaceted significance within the community.

Traditionally, strenuous household chores are avoided on Velika Gospojina, and starting new endeavors is discouraged, with these guidelines especially relevant for women. Many turn to the Virgin Mary in prayer, seeking health, happiness, protection, and inner peace, believing she uniquely understands their struggles and desires. She is also revered as the patron saint of mothers and newborns.

In some regions, the belief that the Virgin Mary protects the sick leads people to visit springs, washing themselves with the water in hopes of healing. Furthermore, medicinal herbs gathered on this day are thought to possess special powers, with traditions of collecting herbs and blueberries for health and prosperity continuing to be observed.
