Osun Decides 2026: Makinde congratulates Adeleke, says voters’ will prevailed

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has congratulated his Osun State counterpart, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, stating the outcome reflected the will of the people. Makinde, addressing Adeleke as his brother, acknowledged the long and difficult political journey leading to the victory.

Adeleke, who switched to the Accord Party after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, secured 511,067 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who garnered 444,815 votes. Adeleke won in 19 of the state's 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11. This win grants Adeleke a second term and marks a significant achievement for the Accord Party, which has never before won a governorship election in Osun.

The election followed intense campaigns and political realignments. Adeleke's move to the Accord Party was a strategic decision after a crisis within the PDP, aiming to protect himself and ensure Osun State's stability. This shift saw significant defections to the Accord Party, including 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly and six members of the House of Representatives.

Makinde's congratulatory message is particularly noteworthy as political actors begin to assess the implications of Adeleke's victory ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Osun governorship race was characterized by a stormy political climate and intense competition.
