Osun poll: Adeleke's camp seeks IG's assurance on peaceful election

The campaign council for Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has formally requested assurances from the Inspector-General of Police regarding the conduct of the upcoming August 15 governorship election. The Imole Campaign Council wants the police chief, Tunji Disu, to publicly guarantee a peaceful, violence-free, and impartial electoral process.

In a statement issued on Monday, the council's spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, emphasized the need for security personnel to act with neutrality before, during, and after the poll. "The Inspector-General of Police must address the people of Osun State and assure them of a violence-free poll on August 15, 2026. He must back his words by action and ensure the neutrality and impartiality of his men all through the election," the statement read.

The campaign council also voiced concerns about the return of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan to his position in Osun State. They alleged that actions taken under his previous watch had raised questions about the police command's impartiality. The council urged the Inspector-General to prevent security agencies from being used to intimidate any political faction and to stop the use of arrests and detentions to harass opponents.

While the Nigeria Police Force has consistently stated that its officers are guided by professionalism and remain non-partisan during elections, this appeal comes amid recent debates over leadership changes within the Osun State Police Command. The call for neutrality from security agencies is a recurring theme as political parties prepare for the August 15 election, for which the Independent National Electoral Commission has concluded its preparations.
