Osun senator calls for local contractors to handle development projects

A road described as more than 100 years old and never previously rebuilt is now the focus of a project launched by Senator Lere Oyewumi in Iwo, Osun State.

Oyewumi, the senator for Osun West and the Senate’s deputy minority leader, flagged off construction of the 0.5-kilometre Akinola-Agbaraale road. He said he selected the project with the leadership of the Accord Party in Iwo Local Government because of its importance to residents’ social and economic activity.

The senator urged residents to cooperate with the contractors and monitor the work. “I want you to cooperate with the contractors. They are competent, and I believe they can deliver a good job,” he said. The contractors are from Osun West, he added, arguing that supporting local firms could stimulate the economy and prevent capital flight.

When I became a Senator, I told my people that any road we will construct must be strategic and must not be a road that has been previously done.

Oyewumi said the project formed part of a campaign promise and would be commissioned before December. He also disclosed plans to donate solar lights to some communities in Iwo town. The project follows two inner roads he previously constructed in the local government, Oriolowo-Agbele and Fojugbagi-Adediti roads, according to Iwo Accord chairman Halidu Adeoye.

Adeoye called on residents to support Oyewumi’s bid for a second term, while a community leader, Musliu Akinola, praised the project and urged residents to support it with prayers. Oyewumi also asked residents to continue supporting Accord candidates in the 2027 general elections.
