Oswaldo Blanco, Tiburones Legend and Creole Pioneer in Major Leagues, Dies

Venezuelan baseball is mourning the loss of Oswaldo Blanco, a celebrated figure in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) and a trailblazer in Major League Baseball (MLB), who passed away Thursday at the age of 80 due to a heart attack.

Born in Caracas in 1945, Blanco began his professional career as a teenager. He played for several LVBP teams, including Estrellas Orientales, Navegantes del Magallanes, and most notably, Tiburones de La Guaira, where he became an iconic player.

Blanco made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox on May 26, 1970, at age 24. This marked a historic moment for Venezuelan baseball, as he became the first Venezuelan player to bat cleanup, the cleanup hitter position, in a Major League game. He also played a second season in the majors with Cleveland in 1974.

His career achievements were recognized when he was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in December 2015. Blanco's consistent offensive performance left a significant mark, with career statistics including 310 RBIs, 149 doubles, 41 home runs, and 860 hits in 954 games played in the LVBP. For Tiburones de La Guaira, he played 522 games, hitting 27 home runs and driving in 230 runs.

Reflecting on his career and values in a 2024 interview, Blanco emphasized humility and standing against injustice. "I couldn't see injustices in the teams or anywhere because I was going to defend people. My mother instilled many positive things in me, and being humble was important. When you let a person affect you, they begin to have control over you," he told journalist Efraín Zavarce.

Magallanes had traded me to Acarigua (1968-1969) and from there I went to Zulia (1969-1970). That season the Águilas management spoke with Padrón Panza to ask for Aparicio back because they needed a figure of roots in the region. Then, Padrón Panza told them he would give him in exchange for another player and my name appeared. That year I played on loan with Zulia. I belonged to the Tiburones and I didn't know it.
