At 92 years old, Oton Guttert is the most devoted swimmer at Osijek's Kupalište Želja, a cherished local spot near the railway bridge. Guttert, easily recognizable by his signature umbrella, has been a fixture at the swimming area for four decades. He visits daily during the bathing season whenever the temperature climbs above 25 degrees Celsius.

"I've been swimming here for a good 40 years. I come every day when the air temperature is above 25 degrees," Guttert shared. His umbrella, he explained, is not just for sun protection but also serves as his personal marker, signaling his presence to other regulars. "The umbrella shows other swimmers that I am here," he added.

Kupalište Želja, once bustling, now attracts only the most dedicated locals. Unlike the more developed Kopika facility, Želja offers natural shade from old trees and a profound sense of peace. Visitors gather in the shade to play cards, drink coffee from thermoses, read, solve crosswords, and even barbecue. "I never went to Kopika because nothing can replace Želja for me," Guttert stated.

Many visitors, like Guttert, have spent a significant part of their lives at Želja, witnessing generations grow up. Mladen, a former renowned diver from the railway bridge, described the atmosphere: "We are all like one big family." He recalled jumping headfirst from the highest point of the bridge hundreds of times, a practice he adored for the sensation of falling.

Despite the decline in visitor numbers compared to its heyday, the sense of community remains strong. Visitors know each other well, sharing daily events and forming bonds. Guttert fondly remembers seeing children he knew grow up, fall in love, marry, and return with their own children, highlighting the enduring familial spirit of Kupalište Želja.
