Otti unveils 80-bed hospital in Abia

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has commissioned the newly remodeled and digitally equipped 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital in Mgboko, the headquarters of Obingwa Local Government Area. The facility has been renamed in honor of the late human rights activist Chima Ubani.

We have reached a new milestone in the effort to modernise our health institutions to reflect the spirit of this age.

Governor Otti stated that the investment in modernizing public healthcare facilities is a key part of his administration's agenda to restore confidence in government-owned medical institutions. He emphasized that healthcare remains central to his development plans, focusing on improving access to quality medical services and reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

The upgraded hospital is expected to significantly expand healthcare access for hundreds of thousands of residents in Obingwa and surrounding communities, including Aba and Osisioma. The governor highlighted the hospital's modern features, such as a healing garden, a technology-driven data management system, real-time inter-facility collaboration, advanced laboratory and scan analysis, a well-equipped theater and eye-care units, observation rooms, and a renewable energy system for uninterrupted power supply.

This facility should remain open every night and day. It operates for 24 hours a day, Saturdays and Sundays inclusive.

Otti explained that renaming the hospital after Chima Ubani is a tribute to the activist's courage, compassion, and lifelong dedication to justice, democracy, and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. He recalled Ubani's roles as a pro-democracy campaigner, Students' Union President at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation, describing him as "a mentor of the masses" who died pursuing his ideals.

Whoever comes here for medical reasons must receive the attention and support they need, whatever their social or economic conditions.

The governor assured that his administration would continue to support Ubani's family and collaborate with healthcare professionals and stakeholders to strengthen healthcare delivery in Abia. He also urged community leaders to help protect the facility from vandalism.
