Otti unveils aircraft named after Chinua Achebe, Onitsha monarch

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft for United Nigeria Airlines, naming them in honor of Nigeria's literary giant Professor Chinua Achebe and the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe. The ceremony took place at Nesto Aviation Services in Lagos.

During the unveiling, Governor Otti commended Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, for recognizing and honoring prominent Nigerians. "For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured," Otti stated, underscoring the significance of the gesture. He also lauded the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for fostering private sector involvement in the aviation industry, noting a shift from government competition to support for private enterprise.

The governor further expressed support for the airline's initiative to establish an aircraft leasing company, believing it will bolster the capacity of local airlines. "What you have done is to help local airlines operate under the strong support of the government," he remarked. Otti also reaffirmed Abia State's commitment to aviation development, mentioning that work on the Abia Airport project, specifically the runway, is in an advanced stage and that the state is ready to serve as a hub for the airline.

Prof. Okonkwo explained that the aircraft acquisition reflects growing confidence in Nigeria's aviation sector, spurred by ongoing reforms. He detailed that one aircraft honors Chinua Achebe for his global literary legacy, while the other recognizes Igwe Alfred Achebe for his exemplary traditional leadership and contributions to national development. Minister Keyamo outlined the Federal Government's aviation reform agenda, emphasizing collaboration and stakeholder dialogue, and praised Otti's dedication to aviation infrastructure, particularly the Abia Airport project.
