Outback rain cancels events for second year as roads flood

The Australian outback is experiencing its most abundant rainfall in years, creating a lush landscape, but this natural bounty has led to significant disruptions. Roads are impassable, cutting off vital access for tourists and forcing the cancellation of cherished community events, a familiar challenge for towns like Innamincka in South Australia.

Innamincka, a small community with fewer than two dozen residents, was devastated by flooding in April 2025, which submerged buildings and forced evacuations. After a 15-month rebuilding effort, the town was preparing for its annual Innamincka Bush Sprints and Gymkhana weekend. However, the Strzelecki Track, the main route for visitors, is largely underwater. The 60km stretch between Moomba and Innamincka is completely closed, forcing South Australians to take a lengthy detour via New South Wales and Queensland.

This cancellation is a major blow to the town's social calendar and economy. The event relies on participants bringing their horses and attracts visitors who contribute to the local community. For the second year running, the beloved "good old-fashioned catching up" will not happen. The situation is mirrored in Milparinka, New South Wales, where the local gymkhana was also cancelled this month due to an inundated racetrack, leaving organizers unable to proceed with traditional events.
