Over 200 Suspected Extremists Detained in Ankara Ahead of NATO Summit

Ankara authorities have detained more than 200 individuals suspected of ties to extremist organizations, including the Islamic State (IS) and the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C). The sweep, which began early Tuesday, comes just weeks before Ankara hosts a crucial NATO summit.

Prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 241 suspects, and security forces successfully apprehended 209 during raids across the capital. The operation is ongoing, with authorities aiming to detain all remaining suspects. Among those detained are 56 IS suspects and 35 members of the DHKP-C, a far-left group known for its armed attacks and assassinations in Turkey.

The NATO summit, scheduled for July 7-8, is expected to draw leaders from 32 member nations, including U.S. President Donald Trump. In anticipation of the high-profile event, Turkey is preparing to implement stringent security measures. These measures will include bans on demonstrations and restrictions on access to roads leading to the airport, as well as securing the areas surrounding the summit venue and the hotels housing the delegations.

This security operation highlights the Turkish government's focus on maintaining stability and security during major international events.
