Over 80 firefighters battle massive Hagley Park Road blaze in Jamaica

A significant fire engulfed the Hagley Park Road branch of Superior Parts Limited on Thursday, requiring the deployment of over 80 firefighters to contain the blaze. The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) described the incident as one of the most intense infernos they have battled in recent times, highlighting the critical role of modern firefighting strategies and inter-agency cooperation in managing the situation.

The fire's intensity was exacerbated by the presence of large quantities of lubricants, vehicle parts, and accessories, many stored in pressurized spray cans and containers. Commissioner Stewart Beckford of the JFB noted that a series of explosions from these containers posed an urgent threat. The immediate priority was containing the fire, which occurred in a densely populated area surrounded by commercial and residential buildings, amidst thick, blinding pillars of black smoke.

Quite apart from the thick, blinding pillars of black smoke, there was a series of explosions caused by these pressurised containers in the building, and that had to be urgently addressed.

Firefighters from multiple stations, including Half-Way-Tree, York Park, Port Royal, Spanish Town, Portmore, Trench Town, Stony Hill, and Rollington Town, responded to the emergency. An Incident Command System was established to enhance coordination and management. Challenges were encountered with accessing high-pressure water from nearby hydrants, but the National Water Commission (NWC) provided crucial support by redirecting water supplies and supplying water trucks. The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) also assisted with crowd control and clearing roads for emergency vehicle access.

Commissioner Beckford addressed public commentary regarding the firefighting efforts, emphasizing that responses are based on training, evidence, and available technology, considering factors like building design, airflow, and materials. While the blaze was ultimately contained, three firefighters sustained injuries, none of which were life-threatening. Two have since been discharged, and the third continues to receive treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
