Oye Ibidapo-Obe varsity to drive innovation, industrial growth — Widow

The proposed Oye Ibidapo-Obe Technical University is set to drive advancements in science, technology, innovation, and industrial growth in Nigeria, according to Mrs. Olushola Ibidapo-Obe, Executive Director of the Oye Ibidapo-Obe Foundation for Educational Transformation.

Five years after the death of her husband, former University of Lagos Vice-Chancellor Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, Mrs. Ibidapo-Obe is working to realize his ambitious vision. The university, planned for a 150-acre site in Ilesa, Osun State, is designed to continue his lifelong dedication to technological progress, research excellence, and national development. It will concentrate on cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Renewable Energy, Data Science, Information Systems, and Industrial Innovation.

"He wanted an institution that would produce the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers capable of driving Nigeria’s digital transformation and industrial growth," Mrs. Ibidapo-Obe stated. The university is currently seeking approval from the National Universities Commission and anticipates commencing operations soon. A formal unveiling is planned for July 5, 2026, coinciding with the foundation's third biennial symposium.

The foundation is committed to maintaining high standards in infrastructure, staffing, and academic quality. The project has garnered support from the late scholar's associates and development partners, with pledges for critical infrastructure and technological facilities. One benefactor will fund the administrative block, and a financial institution has expressed interest in providing technological support. Priority projects include perimeter fencing, the main gate, and academic and administrative structures.

Beyond its academic mission, the university is expected to boost the economy of Osun State and the wider South-West region by creating employment opportunities for academic and non-academic staff. It aims to attract investments and industries seeking a skilled workforce and a research-oriented environment, stimulating growth in housing, hospitality, transportation, commerce, and entrepreneurship.
