Oyebanji intimidating opposition with security agencies, PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has accused Governor Biodun Oyebanji of employing security agencies and state machinery to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the June 20 governorship election. Ayodeji Ogunsakin, the PDP's deputy governorship candidate, claimed that numerous PDP members have faced arrest, detention, and harassment due to their political affiliations.

We call on all relevant authorities to guarantee a level-playing field for all political parties and ensure that security agencies remain professional and non-partisan in the discharge of their duties as we approach the election.

Ogunsakin called upon President Bola Tinubu and relevant security authorities to investigate these allegations and ensure a level playing field for all political parties. He stated that police operatives have targeted opposition supporters, particularly in Ikere Ekiti and other areas, on questionable grounds, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. The PDP argues that democracy cannot flourish when citizens are afraid to express their political views or affiliate with a party.

The PDP deputy governorship candidate further alleged overnight raids on the residences of opposition members and their detention for political activities, such as displaying campaign materials or openly supporting PDP candidates. He accused the state government of prioritizing the harassment of opposition figures over addressing pressing security challenges within the state. The party warned that such continued harassment could escalate political tensions as election preparations intensify.

Responding to the accusations, Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as "untrue, laughable and an attempt to gain undue attention." Olatunbosun stated that Governor Oyebanji is not involved in any arrests and advised the PDP to direct their concerns to the security agencies. He asserted that security agencies perform their duties when laws are violated and urged PDP members to adhere to the rule of law, accusing them of trying to gain attention and parading thugs as members. Olatunbosun described the governor as a peace-loving individual with strong leadership qualities.
