Oyo 2027: Adelabu steps back from legal challenge, seeks APC reconciliation

Bayo Adelabu, the former Minister of Power and an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Oyo State, has decided against pursuing legal action over the party's recent governorship primary. He urged the APC leadership to initiate a broad reconciliation effort to strengthen the party for the upcoming 2027 elections.

In a statement released in Ibadan, Adelabu explained that his decision was not due to a lack of evidence or conviction. Instead, he prioritized the party's overall progress and stability. This decision follows consultations with party leaders and representatives of his supporters across the state's local government areas and wards.

This decision is not because of a lack of evidence, confidence or conviction. Neither should it be interpreted as an act of surrender or an indication that my aspiration to serve as governor of Oyo State is a do-or-die affair.

Adelabu's move comes amid internal disputes within the Oyo APC, where some aspirants have expressed dissatisfaction with the nomination of Sharafadeen Alli as the party's candidate for the 2027 election. These aspirants allege that Alli, who currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District, was imposed on them.

Rather, I have chosen, in the interest of peace, party stability and the larger future of the APC in the state, not to further escalate the matter through avenues that may deepen existing divisions and undermine the cohesion of our great party.

Adelabu stated his commitment to the APC and his decision not to escalate the matter through internal appeals or legal proceedings. He noted that the party's national chairman had previously acknowledged errors, unfairness, and injustice in the primary election process during a visit to Oyo. Adelabu believes that while such acknowledgments are important, they should be accompanied by concrete steps to address the grievances.

He expressed concern that many dedicated party members feel their contributions and preferences were disregarded, leading to the emergence of candidates who may not reflect the popular choice within the party. Adelabu emphasized that these grievances are genuine and should not be dismissed, stressing the need for transparency and a process that respects the sacrifices and votes of party members.

More importantly, our respected national chairman, during his recent visit to Oyo, openly acknowledged that there were errors, unfairness and injustice associated with aspects of the primary election process. We believe that an acknowledgement or apology, though important, cannot and should not substitute for the necessary correction where the opportunity to address the grievances still exists.
