Oyo APC laments rot in health, education sectors

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has sharply criticized Governor Seyi Makinde's administration, citing what it calls an "unacceptable degree of rot" in the state's health and education sectors. The party urged the governor to take immediate action to address these issues for the benefit of the populace.

Despite the mellifluous access to funds, the Makinde administration has been found wanting in the delivery of good governance in all ramifications.

The APC's statement followed a viral social media video depicting a man lamenting the absence of doctors and medical personnel at the Adeoyo State Hospital in Yemetu, Ibadan, to attend to a patient. The party's Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, decried the government's handling of citizen welfare, suggesting that claims of regular salary payments and cosmetic projects funded by the federal government mask deeper governance failures.

Sadare asserted that despite ample access to funds, the Makinde administration has been deficient in delivering good governance. He criticized the visibility and productivity of commissioners and appointees, characterizing the administration as a "one-man show." In the health sector, the APC claimed that beyond salary payments and some primary health center renovations, key facilities like LAUTECH Teaching Hospital and Adeoyo State Hospitals are in disrepair. The party also noted the absence of functional test laboratories and essential medical equipment such as MRI and X-ray machines.

In the health sector, payment of staff salaries and rehabilitation of some primary health centre facilities are the only achievements Governor Makinde can lay claim to, as LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Adeoyo State Hospitals in Yemetu and Ring Road, Ibadan, as well as the general hospitals in several towns are in ruins.

Regarding education, the APC expressed concern over the deplorable condition of facilities in many public primary and secondary schools. They also highlighted the pressure on teachers due to excessive deductions from salaries and allowances. The APC voiced fears that the situation might worsen before the end of Makinde's tenure, suggesting a prioritization of personal ambition and politicking over the needs of the state's residents.

The viral video of the visibly angry man who was seen lamenting non-availability of doctors in Adeoyo State Hospital, Yemetu, was a testament to the rot in the system, but the most unfortunate thing is that the state commissioner for health is not visible anywhere.
