Oyo Attack: PDP Camp, NBA Demand Security Overhaul

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Nigerian Bar Association's Ibadan branch have demanded a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria's security architecture following recent abductions in Oyo State. The calls came after coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area, where teachers and students were kidnapped.

The leadership of PDP, including members of the NWC, the Interim National Working Committee, and the Board of Trustees, are here to commiserate with the government and the people of Oyo over the unfortunate incidents that recently occurred in Oriire Local Government and some parts of Ibadan. We believe the issue of security is fundamental and must be taken very seriously. We are aware of the efforts His Excellency has consistently made to ensure the safety of the people of Oyo and to protect lives and property across the state.

Adolphus Wabara, head of the PDP's Board of Trustees, and Tanimu Turaki, head of the Interim National Working Committee, met with Governor Seyi Makinde. They expressed commiseration with the state government and its people over the incidents. Turaki noted the attacks occurred despite the state government's significant investments in security, especially as political activities intensify ahead of elections.

"Seeing incidents like these happen despite the enormous resources the governor has committed to security is deeply concerning, especially as the election period approaches," Turaki stated. He added that the PDP leadership came to encourage Makinde and reassure the people of Oyo that the difficult moment would pass. The party leaders also urged the Federal Government to urgently reform the national security structure, deeming the current arrangement ineffective.

The Nigerian Bar Association, Ibadan branch, also advised Governor Makinde to review the influx of people into the state in light of the recent abductions. Both groups emphasized the need for increased vigilance among residents and cooperation with security agencies. Turaki stressed that security is a communal effort and encouraged citizens to remain security conscious, pay attention to their surroundings, and promptly alert authorities when necessary.
