Oyo school abductions: Tinubu deploys 1,000 forest guards, tactical rescue team

President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State, Nigeria, and directed a specialized security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to free abducted pupils and teachers. The abductions occurred 16 days prior from three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area.

Mr President is deeply troubled by this incident. Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought back home safely.

A high-powered federal government delegation conveyed these directives to community leaders and lawmakers during a visit to the affected communities. The delegation, led by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. Gbajabiamila assured residents that the President is deeply troubled by the incident and is committed to deploying all necessary resources for the safe return of the children and teachers.

He has issued all necessary directives and is providing every support required by our security agencies to achieve that objective.

Gbajabiamila also addressed appeals from parents and community members for caution in the rescue operation. He assured them that the operation would be intelligence-led and carefully coordinated, employing both kinetic and non-kinetic measures. The delegation also visited the Soun of Ogbomosoland and the widow of a slain teacher, offering condolences and promises of support.

The request for the establishment of a military base in the area has also been transmitted to the President for consideration. The 1,000 forest guards will be recruited in collaboration with the Oyo State Government. The abductions took place on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in the Oriire LGA.
