Oyo school attack: PDP leaders meet Makinde, demand overhaul of security architecture

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria's security architecture following coordinated attacks in Oyo State that resulted in the abduction of teachers and students. The party's Board of Trustees and interim National Working Committee met with Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan to offer condolences and discuss the escalating insecurity.

The leadership of PDP, including members of the NWC, the Interim National Working Committee, and the Board of Trustees, are here to commiserate with the government and the people of Oyo over the unfortunate incidents that recently occurred in Oriire Local Government and some parts of Ibadan.

Adolphus Wabara, a PDP BoT member, and Tanimu Turaki, interim NWC Chairman, expressed concern that the abductions occurred despite Governor Makinde's significant investments in security. "Seeing incidents like these happen despite the enormous resources the governor has committed to security is deeply concerning, especially as the election period approaches," Turaki stated after the closed-door meeting.

We believe the issue of security is fundamental and must be taken very seriously. We are aware of the efforts His Excellency has consistently made to ensure the safety of the people of Oyo and to protect lives and property across the state.

The PDP leaders acknowledged Makinde's efforts to protect lives and property but stressed the fundamental importance of security. They called on the Federal Government to urgently reform the national security structure, describing the current system as ineffective. The party also advised residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, emphasizing that security is a collective responsibility, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of elections.
