Oyo State Governor Inaugurates Commission to Probe School Abduction

Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the Ahoro Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area. The commission, chaired by retired Justice Mojeed Owoade, includes prominent figures such as Prof. Jibril Ibrahim and Mrs. Ayo Obe, and is tasked with thoroughly examining the incident.

Speaking at the inauguration in Ibadan, Governor Makinde emphasized that the abduction was not just an attack on two communities but an assault on the fundamental right of every Nigerian child to learn in safety. He highlighted the importance of parental confidence in sending children to school daily. While expressing gratitude for the safe return of the victims, Makinde stated that the establishment of an independent commission is crucial for learning all lessons and answering pertinent questions.

Makinde stressed that the commission's work is vital for preventing a recurrence of such tragedies, noting that rescue provides relief, but truth offers closure. He articulated that accountability and reform are essential for restoring public confidence and preventing future incidents. "Justice is not only about punishing wrongdoing; it is about learning enough to ensure that the innocent were never again placed in harm’s way," he stated.

The abduction of innocent children and their teachers in Oriire Local Government Area was not merely an attack on Ahoro Esinele and Yawota communities. It was an attack on the right of every Nigerian child to learn in safety and on the confidence of every parent who sends a child to school each day.

The governor also shared a personal connection to the community, mentioning his father taught there in 1959 and reflecting on how such an event could have prevented his own existence. This personal resonance reinforces his resolve to seek international support for an independent examination of the incident.

The commission has been given an initial period of one month to complete its assignment, with the possibility of an extension to ensure a comprehensive investigation. Governor Makinde assured that the state government would provide all necessary support for the commission to fulfill its mandate effectively.
