'Pack a poncho': Gusty winds and short storms for south-east corner

Residents in Queensland's south-east corner are advised to prepare for gusty winds and possible short, intense rain showers this afternoon. A vigorous trough is sweeping across south-east and central Queensland, bringing dynamic weather conditions.

That means fairly cloudy … and it'll be one line of showers and thunderstorms that comes through. I'd probably pack a poncho if I was going to the Ekka.

Senior meteorologist Harry Clark from the Bureau of Meteorology described the day as "dynamic," with a line of showers and thunderstorms expected. While the rainfall totals are not predicted to exceed 10mm, the accompanying winds could be significant. These conditions may affect areas including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Gympie. A marine wind warning is also in effect for Moreton Bay and coastal waters.

They could impact Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, all the way up to around Gympie during the afternoon … Not expecting them to be severe, but certainly a bit gusty.

Meanwhile, other parts of Queensland are experiencing different weather patterns. Northern and western regions are forecast to have clear skies and temperatures two to five degrees above average for this time of year. Minimum temperatures in cities like Mackay and Cairns are expected to be in the mid to high teens.

We will have minimum temperatures in the mid to high teens for places such as Mackay all the way up to Cairns and even inland. Some of the cooler spots like Clermont, which are normally down in the single digits at this time of year, will be at a minimum of around 11 degrees [today].

Looking ahead, Tuesday is predicted to bring cooler temperatures to much of Queensland, including areas like Yeppoon, as dry air moves in behind Monday's weather system. Injune could see temperatures drop to -1 degrees Celsius, with Stanthorpe experiencing minimums of 2-3 degrees. Another weak trough is expected on Wednesday, potentially bringing more cloud and isolated showers to western areas before clearing again on Thursday.

It's a bit of a parade of these troughs coming through from the west over the next few days … A little bit of weather associated with each one, but some cold and clear days in between them.
