Pakistan expresses solidarity with Saudi Arabia at UNSC, condemns Houthi attacks on kingdom

Pakistan voiced strong solidarity with Saudi Arabia at an emergency UN Security Council briefing concerning Yemen, reaffirming Islamabad's commitment to the kingdom's security and territorial integrity. The nation called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve regional differences.

The UN Security Council convened following a significant escalation of conflict, including Houthi ballistic missile attacks on southern Saudi Arabia and an incident at Sanaa airport. The Yemeni government stated it attacked the airport to prevent an Iranian plane from landing, after failing to persuade a Houthi delegation to use a Yemen flag carrier for their travel to Tehran. This flare-up marked the most serious confrontation between the Yemeni government and Houthis in years, with the latter accusing Saudi Arabia of jeopardizing a UN-brokered truce.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan's deputy permanent representative to the UN, condemned the missile attacks and stated, "We express our full solidarity with the brotherly kingdom and reaffirm our steadfast support for its security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity." He also stressed Pakistan's unwavering commitment to Yemen's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, aligning with UN Charter principles.

Pakistan emphasized the need for de-escalation and peaceful conflict resolution, noting that prolonged conflicts exacerbate humanitarian crises and destabilize the region. "At a time when the region continues to face heightened tensions and multiple interconnected crises, we call on the parties concerned to resolve differences through dialogue, diplomacy and a steadfast commitment to de-escalation," Jadoon added. The nation also highlighted the importance of an inclusive political settlement to end the conflict in Yemen.
