Pakistan PM, Iran President Discuss Ceasefire Mediation

Pakistan is actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif holding a significant 45-minute telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The call focused on mediating a ceasefire and fostering regional peace, underscoring Pakistan's commitment to playing a constructive role in resolving conflicts.

During the discussion, President Pezeshkian reportedly criticized the United States' passive stance and perceived "unreasonable actions" regarding the ceasefire, viewing the US maritime blockade as a clear violation of the agreement. He expressed concerns that the US might be betraying diplomatic efforts, echoing past patterns.

Prime Minister Sharif shared updates on Pakistan's recent consultations with neighboring countries and reiterated Islamabad's dedication to mediating for lasting peace and stability. He also conveyed gratitude to Iranian officials for their engagement in the peace process. This proactive stance aligns with Pakistan's foreign policy objective of promoting regional harmony.

The conversation also touched upon the upcoming second round of talks, with Pakistan keen on persuading all parties to participate. Earlier, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also spoke with his Iranian counterpart, emphasizing the need for swift dialogue. Furthermore, a Pakistani delegation led by Army Chief of Staff Asim Munir recently visited Tehran to convey messages from the US and discuss the agenda for the second round of negotiations.

Notably, a US special envoy, Steve Paddock, is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan, indicating continued international involvement in the mediation efforts. However, Iran maintains that nothing has been finalized regarding the second round of talks, highlighting the complexities and delicate nature of the ongoing diplomatic process.
