Pakistan to join China-led AI body as founding member

Pakistan is set to become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO), a body proposed by China to govern artificial intelligence globally. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar traveled to Shanghai for a two-day visit to formalize this membership.

During his visit, Dar is scheduled to participate in the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2026. He will engage with international leaders to foster cooperation in AI and advocate for inclusive and equitable governance of the technology. A key focus of his discussions will be Pakistan's perspective on strengthening international AI collaboration, emphasizing the needs and priorities of the Global South.

During his engagements, the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister will share Pakistan’s perspective on strengthening international cooperation in artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on the priorities and development needs of the Global South.

The Foreign Office highlighted Dar's agenda, which includes addressing the global AI divide, promoting equitable access to AI technologies, and enhancing capacity-building. The aim is to ensure that AI's benefits contribute to sustainable development and shared prosperity worldwide. Dar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his Chinese counterpart and other officials to discuss matters of mutual interest.
