Pakistan, US hold counterterrorism dialogue, reaffirm commitment to combating terrorist groups

The United States and Pakistan reinforced their commitment to fighting terrorism during their fourth counterterrorism dialogue in Washington. The talks, led by U.S. Coordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Gregory LoGerfo and Pakistan's Special Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir, highlighted shared interests in combating terrorist groups and strengthening security cooperation.

The dialogue underscored shared interests in the US-Pakistan counterterrorism partnership and the two countries’ determination to confront terrorism.

Both delegations exchanged views on the current threat landscape and explored ways to enhance collaboration. Discussions focused on strengthening border security and disrupting networks that facilitate terrorist activities. The joint statement specifically identified ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), Al Qaeda, the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its affiliates as significant threats to regional stability.

The renewed engagement signals a positive shift in U.S.-Pakistan relations, moving past the difficulties that arose after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. While Washington had concerns about terrorist sanctuaries, Islamabad emphasized its own security challenges from cross-border militancy. Both countries are now prioritizing areas of mutual interest, including counterterrorism, trade, investment, climate cooperation, and regional stability.

The US and Pakistan affirmed their joint resolve to confront terrorist organisations that endanger the safety of their citizens and the stability of the region.

This improved diplomatic engagement occurs as Pakistan grapples with significant internal security challenges. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies indicates that July 2026 was the deadliest month of the year, with violence linked to terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations resulting in 205 deaths, including 112 security personnel.
