Palestinians Mourn 112 Recovered from Gaza Rubble After Israeli Bombings

Thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood on Tuesday for funeral prayers for 112 people retrieved from the rubble of their homes. The recovered bodies, draped in Palestinian flags, were placed near the ruins of the destroyed dwellings, marking one of the largest funerals in Palestinian history due to the high number of casualties.

The victims belonged to the Al-Hasayneh and Abu Sharia families, who perished when Israeli forces bombed their homes on November 23, 2023. Civil defense teams located the bodies on Saturday. According to a statement from the Civil Defence, the deceased included 40 children, 38 women, and seven individuals with disabilities. Mohammad Abu Dan, a Civil Defence official, stated that teams were unable to locate 157 other bodies still buried under the debris.

These funerals occur amidst ongoing conflict, with Gaza's health ministry reporting over 73,000 deaths and more than 174,000 injuries since October 2023. Palestinian authorities estimate that approximately 9,500 people remain missing and presumed dead under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli military operations across the enclave. The retrieved bodies are set to be interred at the Baptist Cemetery in the Zeitoun neighborhood, south of Gaza City.
