Palm Beach officially changes name of its airport in honor of Trump, his support in Florida

Palm Beach International Airport officially bears a new name: President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The renaming ceremony on Thursday marks the latest institution to adopt the identity of the former US President, highlighting his strong support base in Florida, his adopted home state and the location of his Mar-a-Lago resort.

"I don't think there's anybody more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump in maybe all of Florida," said Eric Trump, the president's son, in an interview with Fox News. Since beginning his second White House term last year, Trump's name has been associated with various initiatives, including a planned class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government prescription drug website, and federal savings accounts for children. Attempts to name federal buildings after him have seen mixed success, with the United States Institute of Peace building bearing his name, while courts rejected an effort to name the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after him.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation in March to facilitate the airport's renaming. The Federal Aviation Administration's three-letter identifier code has been changed from PBI to DJT, though passengers will continue to use PBI for bookings until August 18. The airport stated the name change incurred a cost of $5.5 million.

Eric Trump and his family were aboard the first flight to land at the newly named airport. He humorously noted his intention to ensure a private plane, not a UPS delivery, was the first to touch down. While other US airports have been named after politicians, such as Little Rock's airport honoring Bill and Hillary Clinton, they often retain their original airport codes.
