Pan-African Parliament Convenes Session on Water, Trade, and Governance

Lawmakers from across Africa have gathered in Midrand, South Africa, for the First Committee Sittings and Ordinary Session of the Seventh Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP). The session, which precedes an official opening ceremony on July 27, is dedicated to tackling critical legislative and policy matters. Central to the discussions is the African Union's Theme of the Year: "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063." This theme is expected to shape the debates, resolutions, and policy recommendations throughout the sitting.

Permanent Committees have already commenced their work, with parliamentarians considering reports, drafting model laws, and developing policy frameworks. Key areas of focus include water and sanitation, health, trade, justice and human rights, and rural economy and agriculture. The recommendations forged in these committees will be presented to the full House for debate and adoption during the Ordinary Session. A five-member delegation from Zimbabwe, including Senator Chief Fortune Charumbira, is participating in the proceedings.

Officials highlighted that the Midrand gathering serves as a vital platform for parliamentarians to enhance their oversight capabilities, foster legislative harmonization across the continent, and expedite the integration of African Union treaties and protocols into member states' legal systems. The Seventh Parliament is committed to strengthening its legislative mandate and deepening collaboration with national legislatures and Regional Economic Communities. This cooperation is seen as essential for advancing the AU's Agenda 2063 development blueprint. Senior AU officials and South African government representatives are slated to address the official opening ceremony, setting the tone for the two-week session.
