PAN open to electoral alliances, Jorge Romero says, but vows to preserve the party’s identity

Mexico’s National Action Party, known as PAN, is open to forming electoral alliances, but its national leadership will not impose them from Mexico City, party leader Jorge Romero Herrera said.

Speaking at the opening of an extraordinary meeting of the party’s National Council, Romero said the issue has divided PAN members. He instructed members of the National Executive Committee to begin discussions with local party leaderships and members so that each state can make its own decision.

Romero said the party has not announced any alliance because none has yet been formed. He called the decision vital not only for PAN but also for Mexico, all 32 states and the Chamber of Deputies, which will be renewed in the 2027 electoral process.

He also stressed that internal disagreement was acceptable within PAN. “In PAN, diversity and thinking differently are not only allowed, they are encouraged,” he said, adding that the party would never become vertical. Whatever the political circumstances, Romero said, his task would be to strengthen the PAN brand and preserve the party’s essence. He also predicted that PAN would retain the states it governs and surprise voters in many others.
