Panama appoints ambassador to Guyana, prepares to open embassy

Panama is set to enhance its diplomatic engagement in the Caribbean with the appointment of Ernesto Méndez Chiari as the new ambassador to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. This move signals Panama's commitment to strengthening its presence in the region.

The appointment coincides with Panama's preparations to officially inaugurate its diplomatic headquarters in Georgetown. President José Raúl Mulino announced that the embassy will commence its operations within Guyanese territory in 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster Panama's diplomatic outreach across the Caribbean.

From his post in Georgetown, Ambassador Méndez Chiari will be tasked with implementing Panamanian foreign policy, fostering bilateral relations, and coordinating with international organizations based in Guyana. His responsibilities will also include advancing Panama's strategic alignment with Caribbean nations and the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

The establishment of the embassy follows a recent meeting between Panamanian President Mulino and Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. During their discussions, both leaders agreed to expand cooperation in key areas such as investment, trade, and security. The new diplomatic channel is expected to facilitate direct institutional communication and promote greater economic, political, and cultural exchange between the two nations.

Méndez Chiari brings a wealth of experience in public affairs, strategic communication, and institutional relations, with a proven track record of coordinating effectively among governments, businesses, and international bodies. His academic background includes a master's from Yale School of Management, an MBA from IE Business School, and a bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations from Saint Louis University.
